Correct.  The ImageWriter drivers on the Mac and Apple II can only deal
with a directly connected or AppleTalk connected printer.

The only way you might be able to avoid the AppleTalk interface in the
printer would be to connect it to the other port on the Mac and run
software on the Mac which shares the printer over the network (acting as
a print server).  I don't know if any software of this nature supports
an ImageWriter.

In the "Customize" option of the System 6.0.1 Installer, this is done by
installing "Network: AppleShare" on your hard drive.

Key points (for File Sharing):

1. AppleTalk must be enabled.  Use the Chooser (you may need to reboot
at this point if using classic networking).

2. AppleTalk must be set to use the printer port.  Check the Network
control panel (or the AppleTalk control panel if you are using Open
Transport).

3. In the Sharing Setup control panel: name the machine, specify the
owner name, enter a password, click on the "Start" button.  Wait for
file sharing to finish starting up.

4. Make sure your hard drive (or a folder on it) is shared.  To do this,
select the drive icon (or a folder icon) in Finder, and choose "Sharing"
from the file menu.  The box marked "Share this item and its contents"
must be checked.  Close the window, saving changes, and you should be
ready to go.

5. In the Users & Groups control panel: if you want to be able to log on
as a guest, double-click the <Guest> icon and make sure that "Allow
guests to connect" is checked.  If you want to log on as a named user
from the IIgs, you can either use the Mac owner's name, or create a new
user specifically for the IIgs (this is my preferred method).

On the IIgs, assuming all the software has been installed correctly, you
should be asked to enter the machine name next time you boot.  You then
use the AppleShare control panel to log on to the server.
