I'm not on the committee, so I don't know the exact reasons for KFest, but
I pulled out my current issue of Communications of the ACM (a computer
industry magazine) and looked at the prices of the 2 to 3 day conferences
advertised in there, and noticed most of them are in the $400 to $600
range, and don't include hotels or meals.  And some of those WERE
subsidised by the organization or a major sponsor.
