Actually there is a built-in diagnostic self-test in both the
original and enhanced Apple IIe. The main difference is older one
reports "Kernel OK" if it passes, while the newer says "System OK".
(oh, and if you press all four keys in the former's case, it will
make an annoying high-pitched squeal during the testing phase :).

To perform the self-test requires only pressing and holding
down three keys: Solid-Apple + Control + Reset. Holding down the
Open-Apple (or Command) key is only required on the IIc, IIc Plus
and Apple IIgs.
