The normal booting sequence is that the //e prints to the top
center of the screen "Apple ][" or "Apple //e" (depending on ROM
version), and then it scans slots for bootable drives. The disk drive
should be accessed after the beep, and it'll keep trying to boot until
you either give it a valid Apple II formatted disk (forget trying to
use a PC 5.25" formatted disk), or you hit control-reset. You can try
hitting return a few times after control-reset to see if the vertical
sizing on your monitors is bad-- that'll scroll up some text.

The 16-pin socket near the right-back of the motherboard is for
connecting older joysticks, paddles, and some small i/o devices. Does
not need to have anything connected.

Try a self test of the system with control-open apple-closed
apple-reset (all 4 keys at once), and see if any problems are noted.
[Only works if you have the 'enhanced' //e with the newer ROM, but
give it a shot anyhow] Also, as your email address has .nl
(Netherlands) in it, I'd also check to see if this is an NTSC vs PAL
display problem you're having.
