Yep, you ARE lucky Mitch!  Although you arent likely to get a crash, you 
can do some damage doin a hot swap on audio cables.
I have seen a speaker literally shoot its cone across the room from 
hooking up  a cable live.  There is always gonna be a hum during the 
insertion of a plug until the ground connection is made (the exception 
being these Hi-tech RCA phone jacks that make a ground first connection 
at $10 a pop.  Anyway...FWIW...I dont believe in hooking up ANYTHING 
live, no matter if its safe or not; its just not a good habit to get into!
