Re: Help! IIe won't recog. disk

I am a teacher who was given a couple Apple IIe's for my classroom. They
have worked fine for a couple years now, but one of them has finally
kicked the bucket. Each day this computer would take forever to boot up.
Today it never did recognize the disk. I thought it might be the disk
drive, but both of the drives work OK hooked up to my other computer. I
think the power supply has had it.

I tried connecting the disk drives and monitor to another Apple IIe that
was donated -- the light on the disk drive lights red, but all that
appears on the screen are the letters IIe. I tried resetting, but my
program never comes up. The red light stays on.

As you can tell, I don't know anything about these computers, but I need
it desperately as it has a major role in my curriculum. Any constructive
ideas would be welcome!

Try cleaning the disk drive with a disk cleaner, a special disk that you put
alcohol on and stick it in the drive and let it run for a few seconds. The
next thing you should check out is the speed of the drive - you will need a
utility program like Copy II Plus and a blank disk. If you clean it and can
adjust the speed to normal specs it should work, if not you may need a new
drive.
