One possible reason that this 300 bps modem plugs into the joystick port
as well as the modem port is that it can get +5V from the joystick port,
but not from the modem port.  If the modem has its own power supply,
then this is not the reason.

Another possibility is that it could use the digital inputs (switch 0
and 1, corresponding to the Open-Apple and Solid-Apple keys) as
additional input signals for flow control.  I can't see how the analog
inputs would be useful, and there are no outputs available.
