If Ive been reading the news reports correctly, many of the clone sales
were made because of price/performance ratio. And many of those MacOS
sales either wouldnt have taken place or the sales would have gone to
Intel machines. If Apple would sell decent machines at competitive
prices, they would gain more sales. If Power Computing, Motorola, and
Umax were able to make a profit at $999, Apple should be able to make a
profit. As for R & D, you MAY be able to make a case that Power and Umax
did you R & D (so how did they get better machines), Motorola certainly
had a large R & D project going. Apple continually refuses to sell to
the masses. Until they do, they will continue to shrink.
