Re: 3.5 Disk Superdrive Controller Card Apple IIe,IIgs New

Fellas,

For those of you preferring to stay in ProDOS 8 to do your file transfers to
or from a Mac or other Unix-running box, I suggest you consider running
ProTERM 3.1 at 115,200 baud on a IIGS with one of the built-in serial ports
cabled to the other machine.

I too used to be a sneakernet guy, first with 800kb floppies and later with
100mb ZIP disks, but since setting up my IIGS's as serial (getty) terminals,
all I ever use is ProTERM and the lrzsz protocol suite running in the
background on the Mac to Zmodem the files back and forth. [No Mac
interaction required, other than the machine being turned on, of course.]

You'll find the speed comparable to your best FTP/Uthernet rates. For
example, prompted by Mike's question, this morning I transferred a 800kb
ProDOS floppy image file from my work Mac to my work IIGS in 86 seconds.
ProTERM stats showed 9525 cps and 0 Zmodem errors. FWIW, that IIGS 'only'
has a Zip 7/32.

I suspect that a IIE with Super Serial Card could be set up the same way,
but I don't know what type of speed you could expect. David's ADTPro pushes
the IIE to 115,200 baud, so maybe it's doable.

{If you can stand a _big_ speed hit (probably 1/5th as fast), and don't mind
using Xmodem or Ymodem instead of Zmodem, you can actually stay inside the
8-bit AppleWorks program and use TimeOut Telecom to transfer the files using
the same method}.

I realize not everyone transfers their Apple II files to/from a Unix machine
within 50 feet or so (serial com length limit?) of their Apple II, but for
those who do, the method I suggested saves you the trouble of allocating a
slot for a Uthernet card, and also, if you are primarily an 8-bit guy, as I
am, the delay of starting up GS/OS in order to be able to use Ewen's SAFE2
FTP program. Now, if you're in GS/OS anyway, I would use SAFE2, if for no
other reason than because Ewen's programs are so well conceived, written,
and implemented.

P.S. - If/when Ivan gets all his Netatalk projects perfected, all bets are
off. Nothing beats the convenience of just opening/saving files from within
ProDOS, even if it won't be blazingly fast.
