A much more in depth guide can be found in the comp.sys.apple2
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html section 2.6 on the GS.
Basically, ROM 00 is the first, and should be avoided as it's too
buggy to support any recent versions of GS/OS. ROM 01 is probably the
most prevalent (and you can buy the chip to do the upgrade which once
was free from Apple, but it looks like Apple's gotten stingy and cheap
in not cleaning up after the beta software they pushed on people). ROM
3 has a few more features, but has a few more incompatabilities and is
a totally different motherboard from the ROM 00/01. There is no ROM
2/02.

Best way to determine is turn on the GS and look at the initial
poweron screen. If it's a ROM 01/3, it'll say so. If not, 00.

Avoid 00. Beyond that, it's a tradeoff between a few features and
some incompatabilities.
