After I bought my parents a refurbished computer for Christmas, my brother
expressed how much HE would like to have an internet-capable computer in
his dorm room at school. My parents offered him the old IIGS that my family
has had for years (man, I STILL love that machine), but he turned it down,
going
with the argument that you can't teach an old dog (namely, the IIGS) new tricks
(web surfing). Because I like a challenge, and knowing that there was a whole
cadre of Apple II enthusiasts online, I told him that I in fact COULD make the
IIGS
internet-ready for him, and that he'd have it by Christmas day.
I've done a little bit of searching for IIGS software and hardware, but until I
get
back to my "real" internet account, I'm apparently locked out of reading the
web version of the comp.sys.apple2 FAQ, so please bear with me if I ask any
questions or make any requests that have been covered ad nauseum.
1.) I used to have an old Apple II, 5 meg external hard drive attached to the
IIGS.
With that hard drive came an interface card that is still installed in the
machine
(though the hard drive died on me long ago). Even with my vague description,
does anybody know whether or not that card is proprietary? Is it an actual SCSI
interface card, and can I use it with any standard SCSI hard drive? If not,
does
anyone have suggestions for a SCSI card and hard drive that will work with a
IIGS?
2.) I'm looking for a 4 meg (at least) memory expansion card for the GS. Any
suggestions on mail-order companies that would have them, or would I be better
off posting my request on comp.sys.apple2.marketplace?
3.) Can anyone suggest a program that will allow me to format/write/read Prodos
disks on my Wintel machine? It would make downloading and transferring files
to the GS much easier.
4.) Finally, I could use a suite of internet utilities (especially a graphical
web browser) for the GS. I've seen two that looked promising (the Spectrum
Internet
Suite/Web Browser... though I don't believe it was a GRAPHICAL web browser,
and the web browser that worked with GS/TCP). Any reccomendations on one
over the other? What actually happened with GS/TCP (the last update to the
web page was a year ago, and it mentioned that the suite of internet programs
would be released VERY SOON)?
Thanks for any help that you can offer, and if you wish to e-mail me in
addition
to replying to the newsgroup, please do so at 'sanborn@us.ibm.com'.
