Yes, but in the formative years, the Mac used several custom ASIC's that 
it sometimes couldn't get enough of.  The recent stuff with the clones 
and PREP (CHRP, whatever they ended up calling it) was to move away from 
the custom chips.

Also, we probably would have ended up with a Mac that was about as messed 
up as the PC world is today.
