Apple could've walked the Microsoft/Intel route, and still command the
market without taking a backseat as IBM has.
Walk the Intel route by dictating the minimal motherboard chipset specs
and CPU the computer would have to be to stay compatible and the Apple
computer-type.
Walk the Microsoft route by writing ALL the basic applications for the
computer such as the OS and any major application they can pump out -
even if under their Claris label to avoid anti-trust.
Hindsight is 20/20..
If anybody noticed, there is no such thing as IBM PCs anymore... just
Wintel machines which are compatible with IBM PC legacy software.
Sure there's OS/2, and other OSs, but they don't have the command of
the software market as Microsoft does.
