I am having some troubles with both an Apple IIc and a Laser-128 which
I adopted on my thrift runs.
The IIc just won't boot from the internal drive. When she powers up,
the drive just spins. Control-Reset drops me to the Applesoft prompt
as normal. (And yes, I tried it with a system disk in the drive).
I tried adjusting the drive speed, but that didn't help, and I tried
disconnecting the internal drive and booting from two different
external drives, both 3.5". One is a Laser-128 drive, the other is a
Unidisk. She choked on the Unidisk (wouldn't even bring up the boot
screen), and the Laser drive simply wouldn't do anything. I know the
Laser drive works because I have used it on the IIGS. So would the
problem be with the internal drive itself or the drive controller? If
so, anyone know what specific component(s) might need replacing?
Now, as for the Laser-128, she too can't seem to access either of the
external drives I tried on her. She boots fine from the internal.
For this, I'm just guessing that there is something that needs to be
configured internally to let her see the external port as Slot 5?
Also, the Reset key doesn't work on the Laser. Would this be an easy
thing to fix? Haven't actually looked inside her yet...
On the bright side, even though the IIc won't boot, it was still a
good deal at Goodwill. For a total of $8.00, I got the IIc, IIc
Mouse, power supply, several original disks, and a nice satchel-like
carrying case for it all. As an added bonus, she came with a 2Mb AE
Z-RAM Ultra II card installed.
So any help other than 'Read the $*#@! FAQ' would be appreciated.
I've looked at the FAQ and searched all over the net for technical
documentation for these beasts with no luck.
