Re: ANN: A new public Apple2 only ftp site
Joe Kohn <joko@crl.com> made the following posted claims and statements:
"Please be aware that the software found at:
ftp://209.100.61.57/pub/RAREWARES/HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ
is copyrighted by Bill Heineman and Joe Kohn, and you are not authorized to distribute our
commercial software products. Remove it from your site at once.
Joe Kohn
http://www.crl.com/~joko"
To which I reply:
Hi Joe,
Thanks for making me aware of your posted claims about the contents of the file named
HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ that was available for public access and download from the above noted
ftp site URL.
Please also note: upon my own inspection of the above named file, using all possible methods and
efforts to convert this file to an .SHK archive, I was not able to do so. It was not possible
for anybody to have obtain an .SHK archive from the above named file or varify your posted claims
of holding the copyright and/or ownership of the HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ file contents. The file
was again varified by the site staff and myself as being corrupt in its file structure and thus
it could not have been of any usable or functional use to the public.
The HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ was conclusively determined to have been corrupt in its file
structure and could not have possibly been converted by you or anybody else that downloaded it
from the above noted ftp URL - to have determined the files actual content.
So, anybody that may have downloaded the HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ file would not have been able to
convert it to a functional .SHK archive or have been able to unshrink any such derived .SHK
archive to present proof of the actual content of the HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ file.
I state for the record on this newgroup and in this post again that neither you - nor anybody
else could have possibly determined the actual contents of the HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ file by
its name alone or by downloading it from the above noted ftp URL. That appears to be the only
possible basis you have to use for having made such a conclusion with the statements you posted
concerning the above named file.
If you were _in fact_ personally able to do such valid varification with respect to the actual
contents of the file: HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ and can present valid proof of such content being
jointly copyrighted by Bill Heineman and yourself as a commercial software product, I look
forward to your presenting solid proof of such a claim promptly in another follow up post to this
newsgroup.
Having taken the time and effort to try locating this HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVERS.BSQ file from any other
public Apple2 ftp site - I was not able to find it with the same name. Although, I was able to
locate a nearly identical .bsq file with a slightly different name. The exact url for that .bsq
file is noted below for your access, varification and action, should either you or Mr. Heineman
wish to protest it's being available for public access, download and use from this public ftp
site.
.
ftp://liquefy.isca.uiowa.edu/8/ground/apple2/Mirrors/umich/gs/gsos/driver/hp.vitesse.drivers.bsq
The above named file from this ftp site url has a date of March 25, 1994. I conclude it's been
there from that date for public access, downloading and use.
After downloading this above noted: hp.vitesse.drivers.bsq file, I was able to successfully
convert it to an .SHK archive with the following name: PDRIVERS.SHK. When I unshrunk that
archive I obtained the following files within a folder created with the name: Drivers. Insidethat
folder were the following files with the names as listed below:
DeskJet
driver
Epson.APL
GrapplerPlus
IIPrint
ParallelPro
PRINTER
ProGrappler
README
The above listed README file text contents follow below in an exact copy,
for all to review.
------------------
Welcome to the wonderful world of 300 dots per inch printing without
paying a fortune for the privledge.
After a lot of soul searching, I have finally found a distributor for
the famous DeskJet printer driver...
Vitesse Inc. will market and distribute a Parallel Printer card and
My DeskJet driver as a package for anyone who wishes to use the Hewlett-
Packard DeskJet or DeskJet Plus printer with your IIgs. This driver will
also work with the Laser Jet, LaserJet IIP and the LaserJet III but I plan
to have drivers that take advantage of those printers special features at
a later date. Drivers for the Epson LQ, ImageWriter and PaintJet are planned.
This will be the ONLY version of the DeskJet driver that will be released
as a beta version. The Final version will allow landscape printing and will
allow you to print 300 DPI deferred images in less than 2 megabytes. It will
allow full font list support and better internal print managing that would
be a little too technical for this document.
The font list will be made external to the driver and a font list editor
will be made available to support all the known and unknown font cartridges
available for the HP printers
Font substition ONLY occurs when you select DRAFT printing in the "Print"
menu. If you do not select DRAFT then the driver will use the GS fonts as
best as it can.
Font Substition list...

Courier 12 Courier 12/19
Courier 8 Courier 12/16.67

Venice 14 Presentations 14/10
*Venice 9 Presentations 18/9
*Venice 8 Presentations 16/16.2
*Venice 7 Presentations 14/20
All other fonts print in Courier 12 (Courier 12/10), This list will be made
more complete as more cartridges are brought to my attention.
* = Fonts that print at the proper GS width but are Double in height. Use
double spacing for best results
Helpful hints
Use DRAFT mode in PaintWorks Gold, Deluxe Paint ][ or any other GS paint
program for faster printing.
AppleWorks GS is best for DRAFT in everything BUT the Page layout program.
The Page layout can be used to get EXCELLENT Large GS fonts shrunk down to 300
DPI resolution in NON-DRAFT mode. Experiment and see...
The Page setup menu has a powerful command called Horizontal and Vertical
size. These options allow you to shrink or expand the GS video dots per inch
to best match the performance or your printer. Recommended settings are..
80 Horizontal / 36 Vertical ImageWriter Emulation
80 Horizontal / 72 Vertical ImageWriter Condensed Emulation
75 Horizontal / 75 Vertical Best mode for printing on the DeskJet but
loses a little off the right and bottom edge
for documents pre-formatted for the Image-
Writer. A little editing may be needed but
worth it.
150 Horizontal / 300 Vertical Quickie 300 DPI scans
200 Horizontal / 400 Vertical Quickie 400 DPI scans
The Black & White / Color radio buttons tell the driver if the image to
print is considered PURE BLACK & WHITE, or it has grey tones/ or color to
convert to gray tones on the printer. Personally, I think 75 DPI sux. 300 DPI
gets some REAL nice grey tones.
The 75, 100, 150 and 300 DPI radio buttons determine the quality of BIT
MAPPED graphics. 75 DPI is the lowest quality and 300 is the highest. These
affect print speed dramatically. 75 DPI will print a graphic in 30 seconds.
300 DPI can take as long as 5 minutes. These buttons will NOT AFFECT DRAFT
MODE FONTS that have been substituted inside of the DeskJet. These fonts
will always print at 300 DPI irregardless of setting.
The Compression check box is to allow you to help speed up printing by
"Compressing" the bit map graphic data before sending it to the printer. If
you are hooking up the DeskJet through the GS Serial Printer Port, THEN LEAVE
THIS SETTING IN THE OFF POSITION!!! You can wait as long as 30 minutes for
a printout if you turn off compression. If you are using the Vitesse Parallel
printer card then turning off compression might get you some speed if you
are using a DeskJet Plus. DeskJet standard printers won't have any speed
increase/decrease.
Bi-directional printing doesn't seem to work dispite the fact the manual
says it does. The printer will only seem to print in one direction. If I can't
coax the printer to work bi-directionally then I'll remove this option.

Please also support Seven Hills Software for their help in making this
driver a reality. They are doing an excellent job with GraphicWriter III and
with this driver, there software really shines.

It's possible that this same .BSQ file was renamed and uploaded to my public ftp
site in a corrupted state.
I trust all I've presented within this post will completely clarify the matters to
everybody so interested in them - and that Mr.Kohn expressed his concerns over in
his post.
Sincerely,
Tom
