Re: ANN: A new public Apple2 only ftp site
Hey Joe,
Your reply was: "I read the ReadMe file that was posted. That wasn't corrrupted."
My reply is: Did you also read where the README file
you read, that I posted was derived from and what the
name of the ftp site - the hp.vitesse.drivers.bsq file
it was derived from is?
To make it perfectly clear again for you Mr. Kohn, the
READEME file you read - that I posted, never resided on
the ftp site: ftp://209.100.61.57 - in any area of it.
The README file, you read - that I posted, was never on
the ftp site: ftp://209.100.61.57
Again, I'll try to make it clear to you that the README file
I posted, that you read, came from the Ground mirror (liquify),
which had it inside the PDRIVERS.SHK archive, which was inside
of the hp.vitesse.drivers.bsq file from the following URL.
ftp://liquefy.isca.uiowa.edu/8/ground/apple2/Mirrors/umich/gs/gsos/driver/hp.vitesse.drivers.bsq
The README file was not on the ftp site with the file named:
HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVE RS.BSQ. The HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVE RS.BSQ file was corrupt,
and it was impossible to have read any README file relating to it - from
the ftp site: ftp://209.100.61.57 - that you first posted the removal demand
concerning the corrupt file named HP.OLD.BETA.DRIVE RS.BSQ.
In any case..is that clear enough for you to follow and understand, Mr. Kohn?
Another fact, I'd like to make everybody aware of - concerning the availability
of a driver which you, Mr. Kohn do not have any interest, ownership and/or copyright
to, that will allow people to use the HP DeskJet or LaserJet printers on a IIGS is
available in ShrinkIt archive format with the file name: ljiipdriver.shk , without
the need of prepayment to use it, at my public apple2 ftp site, inside of the RAREWARES
folder from the following URL: ftp://209/100.61.57/RAREWARES/
Also, for the information of the public - please review the following text files content,
that are included within the archive: ljiipdriver.shk

Installation
Copy the LaserJetIIp driver to the drivers folder on your system disk and reboot.
Go into the Control Panels and select the DC Printer panel. Choose LaserJetIIp
as your printer type and whatever port driver you desire (use Printer if you want
to use the printer serial port). Now you are ready to print with the
LaserJetIIp driver.
As a test, print out the registration form (regist.form) included with this
software. After you load the file, go to the Page Setup window and select the
desired paper type and orientation. Now, select Print and click on the OK button
(do not worry about changing any of the options at this time).
Benchmark
To give you an example of the speed improvement over one of the existing drivers,
I tested my driver against the Harmonie LaserJetIIp driver V2.0J (by Vitesse). I
used 300dpi, internal rendering and level 2 compression with the Harmonie driver.
This test was done on an unaccelerated GS through a 19.2K serial connection to
the LaserJetIIp. The test file was tn.iigs.035 (Printer Driver Specifications)
using 12pt Courier, AppleWorks GS v1.1, and ShadowWrite.
Harmonie(awgs) LaserJetIIp (awgs) LaserJetIIp (ShadowWrite)
Total Time 83.5 minutes 8.5 minutes 4.25 minutes
Number Pages 15 15 14
Pages per Minute 0.18 1.76 3.29
As you can see there is a remarkable speed improvement with text output. The
reason for the even better results with ShadowWrite is because AWGS treats each
page as a separate document so the driver has to send complete information about
each page to the printer. ShadowWrite (and just about every other program)
treats each page as a page within one document so the printer driver is able to
reuse information that had previously been defined with earlier pages. You would
not see a similar speed improvement with the Harmonie driver and ShadowWrite
because the two drivers use different methods to render text output and, besides,
the version of the Harmonie driver I have only works with AWGS.

3/13/94 LaserJet IIp Shareware Driver v0.62b
*THIS IS A MUST DOWNLOAD FOR ANYONE WITH A LASERJET IIP OR BETTER PRINTER*
AWESOME! This is a shareware driver by a Canadian programmer (Heath,
sorry forgot the last name) for LaserJet IIp or better printers - printers
with PCL-4 or better should work as well (I just tried it on a LaserJet
III w/ 3 megs). Unfortunatley, it only prints fonts and lacks special
features such as 50% sizing and such.
So, what's so great about this driver? ***IT PRINTS FONTS 10 TEN TIMES
FASTER*** Imagine, instead of waiting 2 1/2 to 3 minutes a page, getting
the full speed out of your laser printer and getting a page in 30 seconds!
Much faster than the latest Harmonie drivers! Check it out!

Description
LaserJet
school is first concern, so I won't be able to complete it for a while and I
wanted people to be able to use it in the meantime. Note: the driver currently
uses a pixel resolution of 80 pixels per inch vertically and horizontally.
Page Setup (Style) Window
Paper Type: All the paper types supported by the LaserJet IIp are supported
by the printer driver. Select the paper type you will be using from the pop-up
menu.
Orientation: You may print in either portrait or landscape orientation.
Select the desired orientation from the pop-up menu.
Print (Job) Window
Resolution: This is the dots per inch that the raster graphics will be printed
at. This option has no effect on text quality as text is always printed at
300dpi. This option is currently not implemented and will have no effect.
Compression: This is the compression mode to use when sending raster graphic data
to the printer. This option is currently not implemented and will have no
effect.
Paper Feed: This option allows you to manually feed paper/envelopes to the
printer or to have the printer feed itself automatically. Select the desired
paper feed from the pop-up menu.
Page Range: This option allows you to specify whether you want all the pages
printed, only the even pages printed or only the odd numbered pages printed in
the numeric page range specified in the To and From boxes directly below this
pop-up menu.
Copies: This option allows you to specify the number of copies of the document
that you desire. If the Non-collated checkbox is checked, a built-in function of
the LaserJet will be used to cause the LaserJet to duplicate each page sent to it
by the number of times you specified. This means that the data for the page only
has to be sent to the printer once and the printer will use its internal image of
the page to make the copies.
No Graphics: This option, when selected, will cause the printer driver to not
print any graphics that it encounters. Only the text of the document will be
printed. Since I have removed the graphics routines, this option will have no
effect.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope this Shrinkit SHK format archive and the information from the text files
included with it, as presented above, for your review in this post, will be of useful
value to those that want such a program to try - for their printing needs with their
IIgs.
Cheers,
Tom
