Perhaps not.  For a while I used a drive from an RS6000 as well (on a
linux box), and it wouldn't spin up until the controller told it to do
so.  It sounds like the RF doesn't recognise this condition, so that
the drive never spins up.  It wouldn't surprise me if Evan is seeing the
same thing.
