Firstly we are currently designing a HAL (hardware compatibility
layer) that sits on top of the CPU to make all computers (8, 16 or 32
bit) alike from the programmers point of view.

The OS is the next stage after the HAL and will probably have a CLI
and a GUI - I am opting for a shared library/devices scheme like
AmigaDOS.

I agree, and this is definately possible - but not all computers have
serial ports.  We will be devising a protocol scheme - it may be
TCP/IP but it could also be of a new design.  If this is a new design,
it would be possible to create a program for Unix that impliments this
new protocol.  It is likely that the new protocol will allow a device
independant networking solution in addition to basic communications.

We can already browse the net on our Z80 based CPC (using ZMP and
Lynx), A native browser is possible, but we will need to revisit these
application issues when we have completed the basic design of the HAL
and OS.
