There are lots of reasons. Mainly, though, the Apple II is a
machine which encourages the user to develop programs, experiment with
hardware mods, and, in general, 'take control'. Admittedly, this has
been less true of the IIgs; but, once a new BASIC is ready, many more
users will become involved in GS programming.

Modern PC's let the user play ultra-cool games, surf the net, run
videos, make web pages, and engage in all sorts of 'productivity'
activities. But, modern PC computing is rather frantic.

The PC user who wishes to experience the newest games or net
goodies at their best must constantly upgrade his/her hardware,
operating system, and applications software. Since there is no "standard
PC" and many vendors of motherboards, Video cards, Sound cards,
monitors, ... the user must also invest a good deal of time in deciding
which particular upgrade product to go with.

Granted, it is virtually impossible to be in the modern computing
mainstream without being a PC user and wondering about the next Windows,
Netscape vs. Explorer, plug-ins, uninstallers, game video format
compatibilities, ... . So, it's kind of nice to boot up a machine, like
your trusty Apple II, which you know isn't going to change tomorrow.
