Have you tried with more than one disk? If other disks act the same try
running the built in diagnostics. Hold down the SOLID APPLE KEY while
you turn on the machine. After a short period of time you should see either
KERNEL OK or SYSTEM OK. If this checks out ok and you have problems with
all you disks you may want to try removing and reinstalling you disk drive
card.
