   If you're not a hardware hacker type, the solution's simple-- ditch
current 3.5" drive, acquire substitute.


If getting another drive is your choice then you may first want to
take your old one out of the case and as least confirm that the interanl
cable has not become disconnected from either the circut board or the
drive itself. 

If you get another drive make sure that it is an Apple 3.5, or less desirable
a unidisk 3.5. The thinner 800k external drive works on a Mac only although
you can swap the drive mechanism it self with either of the other two. Also
the internal 800k drives from Mac Plus and early Mac II's can also be a
cheaper 
source for a drive rather than finding an external one.
