Because it is probably is looking in the wrong place.  When this happens 
again, hit the key combination control-open apple(command)-esc.]

you will be presented with a menu and go into control panels, once there, 
go into slots.  For the startup slot, either specify slot 5 or scan and 
it should work ok.  If it doesnt, then you need the unidisk driver in the 
*/system/drivers folder * being the pathname of the boot drive.
That should cover all the variables.
