Problem with IIgs

I just purchased a used Apple IIgs and having some trouble getting it
working.  I have it hooked up to a Unidisk and color composite monitor from
my Apple IIe.  No keyboard are mouse are attached.  I insert the floppy
(I've tried several) into the floppy drive and turn the computer on.  The
Unidisk drive's light blinks on for a fraction of a second and a 'Check
Startup device' message appears on the screen.  Why can't I get the IIgs to
read my disk?
