Re: Connecting a IIe to a Mac LocalTalk Network
<HTML>Help!
What's needed for hardware/software to connect a IIe to a
Mac localtalk network?
To connect an Apple //e to a Mac localtalk network you will need an
enhanced //e. Additional hardware will include an Apple Workstation Card
for the //e, came with software originally. I got my software from my Apple
Computer Users Group. Apple distributed the software on the Golden Master
CD Rom disk that came out with System 6.0 for the Apple IIGS.
To connect the workstation card to the Mac network you will need either an
AppleTalk connector kit or PhoneNet connector kit depending on how the net
is set up. There are also some adapters that can be used to mix the cabling
but I have never tried that,
On the Mac end if you run System 7.x.x just turn on file sharing and the
//e will be able to connect. Some problems will arise on the //e end if you
do not have the Mac volume(s), folders, and files conform to ProDOS file
names. Also keep in mind that ProDOS will only see 32 Mg on any partition.
If you want to be able to boot the //e over the network you must use
AppleShare software on the Mac. This is a commercial program from Apple.
Version 3 is the newest that can be used for booting Apple IIs. Version 2
runs under System 6.x.x and version 3 runs under System 7.x.x. Originally
this software sold for $700 to %1200 so it may be hard to find at a
reasonable price.
