Re: A partial format?

<HTML>How can I initialize only blocks $000A and $000B of the ProDOS
partition on my Sider (original 10MB Sider, not 42MB SCSI, or
anything)? Would Copy ][+ 8.4's Copy With Format get a desired (for
me!) effects?

I've already tried copying over them with Copy ][+ 8.4's regular disk
copier--that only fixed block $0009.

OR...

How can I salvage the files, or do I have to buy ProSel, etc.? The
drive is othrewise good, as I can boot GS/OS, but after it is loaded
(and it still works after this), it gives me that "can't read .DEV1!
Eject or Initialize?" message. If Copy ][+ did resource forks, I'd be
all set...

Helpful(?) info:At lesat block $000B is in a file, which I can't
   delete (I/O ERROR).

Of course, maybe I've got a physical error--I never park the Sider...I
haven't been jarring it recently, tho...and it survived the trip to
college (and to home from where I bought it) unparked.

If you are going to be doing any disk repair on the block level I would
recommend that you get PROSEL and a good book on ProDOS file structure.
Beneath Apple ProDOS published by Quality Software is the best book I have
found to understand disk file structure.

Block $0009 is most likely part of the bit map so that it was rewritten
when you copied a file to the drive. Depending on the size of your ProDOS
partition you will have anywhere from one to five bit map blocks, starting
with block $0006. If you have 10MB in the partition the last bitmap block
will be $000A

Cat Doctor in PROSEL has the ability to delete files and directories that
are damaged and can not be deleted with normal methods. After getting rid
of files with this method you still need to correct the bit map to release
the blocks that were used by the file that was deleted.

Of course the easiest way to correct all your problems is to reformat your
drive and restore everything from your backup disks. ;)
