Yes, I too spent time with this program in my youth.  The program was
printed (full Applesoft BASIC listing) in BYTE magazine December 1980.  I
poked it in one character at a time on my original Apple II.

You need to find the map (examine the bed in the miner's shack).  When
there are no obvious exits, try "Follow Map", or "Go Road".  I remember
making it through the game, but don't remember all the details.  

The game shouldn't crash in the mine.  If you take the wrong path in the
mine, I think you fall down a 100 foot cliff and die.  The only other way
to get killed (if I remember right) is to try to fight the Indians.  (You
can either ignore the Indians or give them Whiskey).

I used to draw maps of the text based adventure games as I went.  Most of
the programs didn't follow a strictly logical mapping as you would hope. 
I don't think I still have a copy, but shouldn't be too hard to re-draw.

I could probably waste some time creating a walk-through if somebody
hasn't done it by now.
