BILL GATES BITES INTO THE APPLE
Micro$oft buys stocks of the arch rival Apple
Boston. The wounded computer company Apple Computer Inc.
receives Help from the Micro$oft Corp. The company of
Bill Gates will buy stocks without voting rights for 150
million dollars from Apple. This was announced by Gates
and Apple Co-founder Steve Jobs yesterday at the opening
of the Macworld Expo in Boston.
The new partners want to bury their patent war about the
Micro$oft operating system Windows. Apple has accused
Micro$oft of breaking Apple patents during the development
of their bestseller Windows. Now the world's largest
manufacturer of PC-Software Micro$oft obliges itself to
support the new Apple operating system "Rhapsody"
with programs. " We gladly support Apple. We believe that
Apple gives an enourmous contribution to the development
of the computer industry", said Gates.
In the administrative group of Apple Computer will be in
the future Jobs and Larry Ellison, head of the software company
Oracle. Ellison is known as one of the spiritual fathers of
the new Net Computer (NC) and as an intimate enemy of Gates.
Additionally the former IBM financial chief Jerry York and
Bill Campbell, head of the financial software company Intuit
will be placed into this group.
The support obligation of Micro$oft covers future versions of
the Micro$oft program "Internet Explorer", the "Office"
program and some other Micro$oft-Programs for the Apple
Macintosh. "Today's announcement emphasizes our confindence
in the Mac as platform for applications and leading Internet
technologies", said Gates in a video playback.
The announcement caused in the many thousands of listeners,
mostly devoted Macintosh fans to angry "boo" shouts or
amazed silence. Jobs called to his customers that they have
to forget the thought that Apple could only win if Micro$oft
loses. The Gates lecture was accompanied temporarily by
"boo" shouts and shrill whistles, too.
Insiders also await from the Micro$oft decision a signalling
effect for other software developers which have turned
away from the Mac in the last years due to the sinking profits
and have produced only programs for Windows PC's. According
to the opinions of the experts, Micro$oft profits from the
deal, too. With the further existence of Apple's Macintosh
operating system exists at least pro forma an alternative to
Windows, so the US cartel agencies can't work against
Micro$oft anymore.
