Welcome to comp.sys.apple2. I invite you to read the
comp.sys.apple2 Ferquently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html It covers several of your
questions in more detail, and hopefully will answer many more.
>Can you boot MS-DOS on an apple?
On the //c, forget it-- wrong processor, 5.25" drive won't read PC
disks, etc. With a //e or IIGS and a "PC Transporter" card, you can
do that.
>How do you list the files?
Either 'cat' or 'CATALOG' (no 's) depending on which OS you've
booted. For more info, see the Apple II DOS & Commands FAQ referenced
off the FAQ I listed above.
>How do you run the programs (some of them boot to a BASIC prompt)?
That's mostly a question of how the programs are stored on disk--
Basic, Binary, or 'System' file. If you're running ProDOS, you can try
"-filename" (no "s) to try and run a program regardless of its type.
If it's DOS 3.3, you'll need to figure out the filetype from the
CATALOG and then run them manually with up to 3 different commands.
>Does anybody know a good place to get apple shareware?
Please read csa2 FAQ section 5.*. It covers this in quite some
detail, from where to download to how to unpack downloads, etc.
