Which kinds of serial ports do you have? Which Apple // do you have?
You'd use standard communication (AKA terminal) programs, like
WinTerminal, HyperTerminal, ReadyLink, MouseTalk, and ProTerm. Radio
Shack has the proper cable, unless you need one for a IIgs, in which
case you ask any Mac store for a modem cable. The kind of modem cable
depends upon which shape serial ports you've got.
