A cheap, easy PC to apple transfer idea

I have many things in emulator format that I'd like to get into the
Apple ][, and some things on the Apple ][ that I'd like to get into the
PC (a linux box). I have a micromodem ][, but the thought of using both
of my phone lines to transfer software at 300 bps is frightening.

My idea is that it would be fairly easy to write an apple tape interface
emulator for a PC soundcard. Then we could just hook the PC and the
Apple ][ together with standard RCA-type audio cables and do the transfer.
Taking this idea
further, I think it would be possible to speed up the transfer with
custom software, using the tape port at a high speed - I believe the speed and
so forth was controlled by the ROM. The PC's sound card could certainly
support a faster rate, even a cheap old 8 bit card.

I don't think I have either the time or the expertise to code this, so
I am posting the idea to the group in hopes that someone else does. I'll
be glad to put in my two cents. I'd like to see a Linux version of
whatever gets written, because that's what I use.

So, what does everyone think?

Apple ][ forever,
Bob Keyes

p.s. If someone does end up writing this code, please credit me with the
idea, and It would be best as freeware/shareware.
