3.5 disks not readable

Hello!
 
One of our GS (two 3.5 drives, 4 megs ram, internal 20 meg card)
has _suddenly_ stopped recognizing disks in slot 5,1.
Finder gives "unrecognizable" msg even though same disk
is fine in the 2nd  3.5 drive (Slot 2,1)
 
If I try to catalog a disk there using Copy II I get IO $0002 error.
 
I reinstalled the 3.5 drivers & console driver & also rebuilt the desktop,
but the problem remains.
 
Any suggestions and help appreciated!
