Does it sound a little like the static that you get on your radio during a
thunderstorm?  My ROM 01 GS at work does that all the time.

It seems to be related to problems with early GS power supplies...this
machine did it incessantly until the power supply died; when I put in the
new supply, the noise quit for a while.  Perhaps it is just noise in the
power supply getting induced through the audio circuits...nothing to worry
about until something dies.
