Something you might try... instead of using the YM2149, source some
YM2203s with their associated YM3014 DACs, or YM2608s with their
associated YM3016 DACs.

The YM2203 is a YM2149 variant that adds three channels of 4-operator
FM synthesis, and the YM2608 is a YM2203 variant that adds three
additional channels of FM, as well as an 8-bit PCM channel (there's
even rhythm and noise "voices" inside of the chip, that use the PCM
channel.)
