I opened the case and took a look at the cards inside the case and it
looks to me like the 1080 is wired like so:
Pin 1 & 2 Gnd
Pin 3 Red
Pin 4 Green
Pin 5 Blue
Pin 7 Composite Sync
Pin 8 Horiz Sync
Pin 9 Vertical Sync
So the 1080 D-Sub 9 port is wired the same as the 1084

I also tried to connect the composite sync coming from the iigs to
horiz sync and vertical sync and got the same problems....

If it's not a dirty switch (I have a 1902 with a dirty switch in front
that i have to jiggle to get a svid pic in), then you probably need
some resistors on the horizontal & vertical lines.
I had to do that to connect an Atari 1024 ST to a 108x monitor (I have
a 1902, 1080, & 1084). Unfortunetly (for you) I have a Sony CPD-1302
that I have my IIgs connected to, and I didn't have to resist anything
on that. I haven't tried to make a 108x cable for it yet, so I'm not
sure.
