IMHO it's quite OK to start out with BASIC on A][ or emulators thereof,
_but_ to earn a living You should look into quite different languages.

Try to get proficient in C/C++ as well as smalltalk and then learn
- I know, _real_ programmers,... - COBOL. Decades from now there still
will be Terabytes of COBOL sources nobody wants to trash...

BTW, I _hate_ COBOL
