Tell me about it, a relative recently sent me a "NetWork" brand XT
clone to upgrade. I took the NSC from my dead IIe logic board in
the closet, plugged it into one of the row of ROM sockets, and
installed the PC software. The software is on the opposite side
of the Apple software...it is a disk formatted one side Apple, one
side MS-DOS! Neat! Anyways, despite all these years gathering
dust, the NSC still works.
I also replaced the 8088 with a V20. Those old XT's were terrible.
I thought the PC Transporter had slow disk access because of having
to communicate through the Apple slots, but surprisingly, the real
XT's MFM hard disk was SLOWER and the XT's floppy drive was MUCH
SLOWER. No wonder AE claimed that the PCT ran rings around a real
XT. In anycase, after seeing it in action, I can say that the
PC/XT was a piece of trash compared to a similarly equipped Apple
IIe. An 8MHz Apple IIe with 512K of RAM and a 20MB SCSI hard drive
runs rings around a "Zipped" (ie. 10MHz V20'ed) XT with 640K of RAM
and a 20MB MFM hard disk.
BTW, does anyone know why 9 42256 chips make up a 256K bank in an
XT while only 8 42256 chips make up 256K in an Apple IIe?
