Vulcan Problem Fixed
I got one response and mailed as directed, but before I could get an
answer I got the problem sorted out.
Might want to save this for FAQ material, Nathan.
Vulcan Intermittent Operation
Symptoms:
Main -- slow to spin up, or losing spin while operating; you can hear it
trying to 'restart' sometimes. When slow to spin up, floppy drives get
searched.
Others -- Flickering monitor. Programs crash if they go to disk when it's
not up to speed. Sometimes during intense flickering they crash if just
idling.
Problem: Vulcan fan motor shorting out slightly and intermittently,
drawing power.
Test: Open Vulcan. UNPLUG. Wait. Wait more.
Remove screws around top on both long sides.
Remove top. Fan has short wire to power supply.
Lift and pull wire to unplug.
Reinstall Vulcan without lid and test.
If it works, you're done. FOR NOW. You don't want to leave the lid off
forever. No you don't. Dust will collect in there even more. It'll be OK
for a while. Take the fan off the lid and find another that fits. Swap
the plug from your old one to the new one, and then reinstall the lid/fan.
NOW you're done. Or maybe a System Saver will cool it enough. But are you
willing to take the chance? How much are fans? Cheap insurance.
I had a Vulcan 40 as a backup and tried that lid/fan. It was bad also.
Might be a chronic problem. Worth dragging out any old Vulcans and trying.
