The only time I've ever had anything happen like that to me was when I
wasn't paying attention and wired wrong. I was hooking my GS to a Mac
via serial cable and I forgot to use a null-modem. About 5% of packets
got through, and there was constant noise being registered by the GS.
Good thing Zilog made those 8530's strong, I guess. I'm lucky to not
have blown out a serial port!
