This is probably because that increasingly, people are becoming
stupider about computers, not more intelligent.  And since developers
want to sell software to the idiots, they have to make installation
idiot-proof.  Which pretty much means that archives will increasingly
be only executables (despite the fact that executables take up more
space than simple compressed datafiles).

However, this may also mean that the applications might be slightly
smaller, since they no longer need to create files in the places
where the idiot user forgot to place the datafiles...
