It is (was) a totally new system that runs it's own software *and* all the
old stuff.  There may some old stuff it won't run, but offhand I don't know
of any.

No.  No.  YES!  

Check out comp.sys.apple2.marketplace.  Hardly a day goes by without
someone posting a message selling a //gs system.

Also, there are emulators that run on Macs and PC's that allow you to run
Apple //e and //gs software.
