I was having trouble downloading .tgz files on my Linux box from my ISP.
They would not unpack. Nobody could figure out why. I was thinking about
it one day and remembered that I had changed my default shell to tcsh. I
changed it to bash and now everything works fine. It's a long shot but
you might want to try bash if you're not using it. You can just type bash
after you get logged in.
