The comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html section 2.6 ("The Apple
IIGS") has a far more complete list than I'd care to either retype or
cut and paste in.
In short, the ROM 3 has more RAM on the motherboard, more tools in
ROM, different slot functionality, and more incompatabilities with
'On-the-metal' programs like demos and certain games. Because code in
ROM executes slightly faster, the extended amounts of the toolbox in
the ROM 3's ROM allow toolbox-using apps to execute slightly faster.
Non-toolbox (//e programs, most games) will have little to no
difference.
