The way to prevent problems with illegal filenames under ProDOS is
to obtain a patch utility called "Quick Fix." It is normally distributed
as part of the "2qwk!" package. It patches ProDOS 2.0.3 and several
other programs so that they will accept just about anything as a
filename. This is handy if you download from non-Apple platforms
frequently. The program is remarkably problem-free with the exception of
the BASIC.SYSTEM patch. What I'd do is get the patch from one of the
many FTP sights such as "ground.isca.uiowa.edu" (you may need to download
the entire 2qwk! package to find it) and use the patcher to patch a copy
of ProDOS. Next, I'd rename the files for compatibility (using the
patched system.) I'd say always boot a patched ProDOS so you can avoid
this issue.
Be sure to read the Quick Fix documentation as it explains the
rather cryptic interface of the program. If you need more info about the
problem with BASIC.SYSTEM, I can send it via e-mail or you could search
DejaNews for it.
