More information is needed, but it sounds like a problem
similar to one I had recently.  What do you mean by
"the damn GS doesn't just boot with the OS"?  Do you get
any error messages, or does the system crash, or does it
just hang - MORE INFO!

My problem was corrupted directories in the SYSTEM folder.
ProDOS-8 would boot fine, and only a few programs complained about
errors (Shrinkit was one that springs to mind).  As soon as I
attempted to load GSOS from either the hard disk or a floppy,
the GS would crash.  It would give 'unable to load application'
error trying to load the finder or would freeze when putting the 
hard drives icons on the desktop.

I had no fix programs like ProSel-16 (and still don't have).
I re-formatted the volume after taking off everything I 
didn't already have backups of.
