Newbie Help

The Community Center where I volunteer has just been donated two Apple
II GS's, complete with color monitors and imagewriters. Although I was
at first daunted by the prospect of supporting such venerable machines,
I have come 360 degrees since encountering all the marvellous on-line
resources for this unappreciated computer! I am a convert to the
computer of my youth! Thanks to Nathan Mates, Matt Portune, RTK and
many others for your informative pages. I now know that we have rom 01
and 512 K of RAM.
Unfortunately our computers came with no software, and there is no
money in our budget for such expenses. I have read eagarly about public
domain sites, but I seem to be ftp incompetent. Made lazy by my
precious Mac IIci, I have no idea how to interpret the cryptic lists I
find at these ftp sites. How do I know what to download? We could
really use a word processor, educational games and a typing tutor
program, but I don't know where to begin downloading. It seems that
there are some standard decompression programs, but I can't seem to find
them either. Will unstuff-it help me in this new endeavor? What about
AppleWorks? Is there any way to get it on-line? I have un-earthed
some DD-DS disks from my college days, so if I could find somthing I
could copy it to an appropriate disk. I just can't figure out how to
match ftp-names with english titles.
Any help or advice offered by this illustrious gathering will be
greatly appreciated.
