Given the amount of ram, you're probably going to have to treat
them like fast color Apple //es, etc. Not too big a deal, as there's
tons of software for machines of that caliber.

If you want, look around for Applewriter, which was a very popular
commercial text-based word processor that has been placed in the
public domain by the author. However, you seem to imply (in stuff
quoted below) that you already have Appleworks. Appleworks is a very
fine text-based wordprocessor; I don't know of any public domain
graphical word processors for the Apple II.

Nope. However, you've already found some of my web pages. Go to the
comp.sys.apple2 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at
http://www.visi.com/~nathan/a2/faq/csa2.html section 5.1, 5.3 and
especially 5.11-5.13. Those sections (and to a lesser degree the rest
of the 5.* section) detail what programs you need to unpack 99.9% of
all legitimate Apple II software archives-- Binscii and Shrinkit,
where to get them, and how to get them up and running.

>What about AppleWorks? Is there any way to get it on-line?

There were some commercial addons to appleworks that allowed it to
go online. However, those are a bit harder to find nowadays, so you
may want to check out section 10.2 of the FAQ (see URL above) and get
Steve Cavanaugh's $3 modem disk including comm software, decompression
programs, and the like.
