CD-ROM problems

A friend has GS and a Sony CD-ROM player. Sometimes the CD-ROM shows up on
the SCSI bus and sometimes it doesn't. He has it at the end of the SCSI
chain, behind his hard drive, and it appears properly terminated. He's
using a RamFAST card, v3.01 or thereabouts. When I ran RamFast.system, I
could see the CD drive listed even though GS/OS couldn't. He says he has
better "luck" if the CD is powered on first. Usually, he says, he can get
the CD recognized if he keeps restarting and fiddling with the CD (putting
discs in and taking them out).

So, what do you think? Is the problem most likely hardware or software? Or
just plain ole "SCSI voodoo". I'm not even sure where to start trying to
assist him. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!
