It is the control panel device (CDEV) that lets you tell the operating
system (GS/OS) what kind of printer you have attached to what port.
Your GS/OS programs will use this setting to determine what the
capabilities of your printer are and let you use the full capability
of your printer.

If ImageWriter is the only one you have listed in the DC Printer CDEV
then that is the only printer driver you have installed in your boot
drive /SYSTEM/DRIVERS folder.  If you have a printer other than an
ImageWriter attached you must install the printer driver to this
directory and select it in the DC Printer CDEV before your programs
will be able to print properly to your printer.

Finally, to answer your last question, no this should not be causing
your problems with Express unless you have the wrong printer selected
in the DC Printer CDEV.
