I resolved my catch-22 with ADT.  It is available from
ftp.apple.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/utilities.  After getting ADT
working, you can get the images for Shrinkit, BinSCII, et. al. from
that site, also.  If you pick up Z-Link, ProTerm Demo, or some other
comm program, you're all set.
