Disk ]['s have been known to "blow up" with no help at all from a
user. If your cable was not plugged-in incorrectly, then there is a good
chance that the noise and smoke came from a capacitor inside the Disk ][.

Sometimes, the capacitor pops a seam and spews "smoke"; sometimes, it
explodes with a shotgun-like BANG. Basically, the cap develops an internal
short, heats up, and, like a sealed can of soup on a stove, blows.

If a blown cap is the culprit, it should not be too hard to locate on
the Disk ][ circuit board-- look for a small can-shaped thing with goop
nearby. Replace the capacitor and you should be ready for a less
spectacular start the next time you power-up the drive.
